Food Poisoning
Every year, lots of people worldwide are afflicted by food poisoning, whether at home and abroad.
Food poisoning is preventable should you follow simple food hygiene tips.
Food Preparation
In order to prevent any bacteria from spreading, make sure you do the following:
- Wash the hands before and after food preparation, particularly if you are touching raw meat
- Prepare all raw and ready-to-eat food stuff separately
- Always use clean equipment and utensils. Always wash knives and chopping boards which come into contact with any raw foods
- Keep hand towels and tea towels clean and always wash them frequently. Remember to replace any wash cloths regularly
Cooking Food
Always remember, in order to kill any unwanted organisms you must take your time to ensure that you cook food properly.
Chilling Food
Many foods need refrigeration, so when using these foods, it's important that you take notice of the ‘use by’ dates.
Always remember:
- Whenever you arrive home from shopping, to always place food that requires refrigeration straight in the fridge
- Cool cooked food as fast as possible and then place it in the fridge
- Keep raw meat and poultry inside a sealed container. Place this container towards the bottom of the fridge to prevent it touching or dripping onto other nearby foods
- Keep your fridge organized in accordance with food type and never overload food in it, since this can prevent cold air from circulating correctly
